A water closet or bathroom can be a cramped place, yet it is still a place where some storage is handy. When bathrooms do not have a built-in closet, or when the built-in closet is too small, an over the toilet unit can provide the perfect place to keep toilet paper, washcloths, hand towels, spare bars of soap and more.
The cabinets are usually supported by two or four legs and are fastened to the wall for security. Most of them are lightweight in material or construction, so it is best not to plan to keep a major portion of the family library or heavy vases on them. But for organizing those small things that are often used in a bathroom, they are handy, indeed.
- Open Metal Work Shelving
Open metalwork supports with glass shelves help organize small items without making the space seem cramped. Delightful for supporting air plants, ornamental toothbrush holders, and similar items, they minimize visual clutter while adding a decorative element. Simple metal work shelving might be slightly less decorative, but no less pleasing to the eye. Elegant scrollwork shelving can also be used. These sorts of shelf unit are usually supported by four legs that are placed astride the toilet tank.

If you like the idea of having those homely necessities, such as toilet paper or feminine products close at hand but out of sight, and nicely made cabinet that fits above the toilet tank could be ideal. With hinged or sliding doors. Some units have added shelves outside the cabinet, which make a good place for toothbrushes and other grooming tools. This type of cabinet usually has two one-board wide legs that fit on either side of the commode.
The front of the over the tank storage can have several styles. Two of the most popular are a simple cabinet front or a louvered front. The cabinet front is best for concealing humble bathroom items, whereas the louvered front allows the aroma from potpourri to waft out throughout the area. Both are attractive and functional. Most over the tank cabinets are tall – around six feet from floor to top, but some are small and fit cozily around the tank. The latter can be used as a display or storage surface. Even the tall cabinets sometimes have top space that can be used for storage, but some have a gracefully curved top that is decorative rather than functional.
Common colors for bathroom cabinets are white, chrome and glass. But you can, of course, have any color cabinet you choose. Metal cabinets are frequently chrome, but could just as easily be black or a strong primary color. Wood cabinets can be any color you desire. However, it is a good idea to keep in mind that strong or dark colors can make your bathroom seem smaller.
