The best way to hang a large rectangular mirror is by first identifying the wall studs’ location, compile needed tools and mounting hardware, and accurately measure your space. Large rectangular mirrors for walls are usually quite heavy and require extra steps to hang them safely.
Determine the weight of your mirror and obtain matching mounting hardware. Many mirrors come with this hardware already attached, including brackets or cleats, clips, wire, and D-rings. If not, you will have to install them yourself.
Ideally, you want to hang your mirror where the studs are in your wall. Often, though, these are not conveniently located. If this occurs, use wall anchors designed to hold slightly more than the weight of your mirror. Also, determine the type of wall you have, either drywall, plaster, or brick, and look for anchors intended for that material.
Take the time to measure accurately for hanging your mirror level. Ask a friend to help lift the mirror into place.
When hanging large rectangular mirrors for walls, you should generally place the accent anywhere between 6” to 24” above the furniture. For the best look, center a more oversized mirror between the ceiling and the back of your couch, leaving at least 6” between the topmost part of your couch and the mirror. For mirrors that hang above a table in the hallway, opt for a little more space between the tabletop and the mirror’s bottom edge.
If your mirror is medium to small-sized, consider leaving about 8” to 12” between the piece of furniture and the mirror’s edge, with a larger space between the mirror and the ceiling. It is appropriate to hang your mirror slightly higher or lower based on what looks right for your aesthetic.
