The Witch's shoes

This is a very popular design for door stops, and is certainly among the coolest. Anybody who knows the story of The Wizard of Oz knows how Dorothy took the Wicked Witch's red shoes and went off on her adventure on the Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard himself. The famous scene where the witch lies underneath the house with black and white striped tights and sparkling red shoes provides the inspiration for this cool door stop. Heavy enough to hold your door back, and angled just right to go underneath the door, any fan of musicals will be keen to get their heads on this.

Available in a wide range of designs, a popular door stop has emerged in the form of a small figure using his strength to try and keep the door open. The shape of the figure varies slightly, but may have one foot under the door and one foot positioned flat on the door as if he is pushing it open with his foot. Others have their feet firmly on the ground, but their hands are flat against the door to give the impression it is being held open. These figures are normally made from ceramic or a very thick and sturdy rubber.

A similar design is a single flat leaf which is made of sturdy rubber or ceramic, and can be placed underneath the door at just the right thickness to prevent it from closing again.
