When perusing armoires for sale, you should consider their size before anything else. Most armoires tend to be about 24 inches deep. However, even though that’s a standard size, you also see armoires that are as narrow as 12 or 18 inches. Aim for 24, because that gives you enough room to accommodate modern hangers with extra breathing space.
A typical height is six feet or 72 inches tall, and the width can be anywhere from three to seven feet! In terms of width, make sure to measure your existing space. However, a good average width for a practical armoire is about 4-5 feet wide. Just make sure that you have room on either side of your armoire to walk around.
You can paint an armoire, but first, you need to prepare it for a new coat of paint. Many armoires for sale are older and may have the old paint chipping. You may also see cracks forming in the wood. For the best outcome, attend to these issues before painting.
The first step is to clean the armoire of any dust or grime to avoid trapping them under the paint. Sanding is the next step, creating a surface the paint can better adhere to. Armoires are often coated in a shiny varnish which requires medium 100 grit paper for more intense sanding to remove.
Closely inspect the armoire for any cracks or holes and fill these with a wood filler. Remove all the knobs and place painter’s tape over the hardware.
Apply a primer to your armoire and let it dry. Choose your paint color and brush or spray it on, coating the entire armoire. Add a second coat for a professional touch. You may need to restore the knobs if they are older or purchase new ones to add a different look.
