If you are tall, heavy or just love to curl up and sink into deep cushions, a wide seat sofa might be just what you are looking for. Most couches have a depth from front to back cushion of between 31 and 40 inches. For many people, this will allow them to sit comfortably with their feet on the floor. Exceptionally short people might find their feet dangling, while tall people might find themselves scrunched up with their knees pointing towards their chins. Oddly, a wide sofa seat can help with both conditions.
If you are a tall or large person, the benefits of a sofa or couch with a wide seat are obvious. You have room to sit comfortably. The extra width means that the bend of your knees is supported by the cushions of the couch, and you have a nice 40-degree angle knee bend – no scrunching. Your back meets the couch cushions and is nicely supported.
A short person might find the seat too deep for good back support and might have dangling feet. However, a wide couch is a perfect place for the vertically challenged to install some extra cushions and curl up for one of those super power naps. Add a computer desk that swings over a seat – especially one with a stabilizing handle for users, and you can have a comfortable place to work or to play. A wide seat sofa also makes a comfy place for reading aloud to youngsters, or a nice place to read your own book. It can even be the ultimate couch on which to potato – if you are into being a couch potato.
Extra wide couches come in all sorts of upholstery. They can sometimes even be part of a sectional arrangement and have all the gears and levers to make them recline. If your height is in the six-foot plus range, with the weight to go with it, your feet and body are really going to appreciate the comfort!
Comfort can come in faux leather, standard upholstery material, real leather, brocades and more. Mix and match the colors with the other furnishings in your room. Since a couch is a large piece of furniture, it is often a good idea to use a solid or neutral color, then add splashes of color with throw pillows or bright afghans.
As you plan your furniture arrangement, don’t forget to factor in a wide seat sofa’s larger footprint. Keep in mind that you might need to give up a smaller chair or perhaps an occasional table in trade for the width. But if it makes you more comfortable, it will be well worth the effort.
