This combination is a popular design for French country furniture. Floral upholstery has a romantic feel to it which is ideal for many people, particularly those living in cottage style houses. Floral patterns are often paired with wooden furniture. The furniture may be made using a darker wood such as oak, or a lighter wood such as pine. Lighter wood gives a more delicate appearance and is best suited to lighter floral patterns such as small pink roses or intricate yellow daisies. Darker wooden furniture can be combined with darker floral French country upholstery, such as darker greens and browns.
Rustic wooden furniture
To give your home a French country effect without putting in too much effort, opt for the rustic wooden look which can be achieved quite simply. A table which is made from recycled crates or a natural wood look coffee table can quickly change the appearance of your living room. Add either a set of two or a set of four wooden French country dining chairs, and your guests will think they have walked straight into a Parisian cafe!
Decorative and detailed furniture
If you want something a little fancier for your living room, have a look at the more detailed versions of French country furniture. These are most often simple sofas and dining chairs, with elegant frames which are then decorated with swirls, patterns, and other shapes. The edges around the chairs or tables could be painted a traditional gold, while the fabric of seats is often a light grey or soft pink. The edges are not always gold, and may be a more neutral white in order to achieve a more soft and subtle look in your living room.
Furniture such as lamps and ornaments will make up a large part of the décor in your home. For a modern French country living room, a modern lamp with a chrome stand is suitable without damaging the look.
However, if you are going with a traditional style and using floral patterns and other typical French country designs, it is a better idea to look at lamps that have wooden stands. This maintains the country feel and enhances the rest of your living room furniture.
Cushions are another great way of adding to the French country effect in the living room. Large padded cushions in a color designed to coordinate with the rest of the furniture is always a good option, although some people prefer to be bolder and opt for colors which are opposites.
