Using floor lamps to decorate your home is a fun way to define the visual aesthetic and set an atmospheric mood at the same time. Depending on the style you’ve chosen for your home, there’s an array of floor lamps that can enhance the look.
For farmhouses, log cabins, and country cottages, a lodge rustic floor lamp is a must-have decorative piece for the home. If you want a hint of the rustic lodge vibe in your home but nothing too bold, choose a unique lampshade. You can opt for a classic tall, dark wooden or metal base and a beige lampshade with a rustic stitching feature at the seams, or even a lamp shade with black metal cutouts on the inside, creating images of a forest or northern wildlife when illuminated.
When decorating with floor lamps, it is important to consider placement. Avoid positioning the lamp where it obstructs the flow of foot traffic or interrupts sight lines. Try placing the lamp in a corner to create a cozy diffuse light or at the end of a sofa as a targeted reading light.
Lodge rustic floor lamps are great for any room of the house, but they work exceptionally well in living rooms, bedrooms, and other rooms with minimal table space. They do not work as well in small rooms, like mudrooms or laundry rooms. This is because floor space is limited in those rooms, and it is possible to knock them over while trying to navigate the small space.
They may work well in offices, where lamp placement should be carefully considered to minimize overall eye strain. Some people prefer the directional light provided by desk lamps in their offices, but it will largely depend on how much natural light is in the room.
Lodge rustic floor lamps are typically 55”-65” high. However, they can be even taller if necessary to light an area properly. Arched floor lamps or floor lamps with built-in shelves sometimes measure up to 78” high.
Lamps shorter than 48” are usually intended for tabletop use. In some cases, they can still be used as floor lamps next to beds or bean bag chairs.
The goal for floor lamps is to make them high enough to light up a whole room without furniture blocking the light and casting shadows. Taller floor lamps are not necessarily easier to knock over, as long as their base is large enough, so get a lamp that is tall enough to be useful in your setup while genuinely adding to your decor.
