When purchasing a specific number of diner bar stools, consider first the length of your bar. You’re going to want about two to three feet of space for each stool, in order to give the people sitting on those stools the optimal amount of elbow room. So, for example, if your bar is about six feet wide, you should purchase two or three diner stools. If your bar is of a middling width, round up or round down based on the number of people you regularly host.
There are dozens of types of diner bar stools. Some of the major ones include:
- Low Back – Provides comfort and support while retaining much of a stool’s traditional appearance. The stool’s height and understated back make them a good choice for rooms with an urban modern decor.
- High Back – Designed for optimal support and comfort, they have a more classic look. A high back stool will be most appropriate with contemporary decor.
- Rolled Back – A mid-length back that rolls back gently for additional flair and style. It provides better comfort than a flat back stool and will be best suited for bars and other settings where hours of sitting is expected. Rolled back stools can fit in with traditional decor.
- Armed Sides – This stool tends to be larger than most diner bar stools so best suited for rooms or settings with plenty of space. With the tall back and armed sides, it gives additional comfort and style. Often fitted with upholstered linen, this stool goes well with farmhouse decor.
- Backless – It has no back support. This stool can serve as extra seating in bars, cafes, lunchrooms, health clinics, doctors' offices or even in your home kitchen. Depending on the material they are made from, backless stools can accentuate minimalist design.
- Bucket – This type of diner bar stool has a sturdy build and is easy to clean. It withstands wear and tear better than other types. Bucket stools are heavily used in bars and restaurants. Depending on the stool’s design, you can place a bucket stool in a mid century modern themed space.
