To reupholster a wing back chair, you generally need between 5-7 yards of fabric. You can also determine a more precise measurement for your particular chair and chosen fabric by evaluating the width.
First, choose the fabric, then determine the bolt’s width. The most common widths start at 36” and go all the way up to 118”. Keep in mind that edges are often unusable, so you will need a little extra fabric to create a seam or hem.
Next, measure the chair’s surfaces individually at the widest and highest points; this includes the seat, backrest, and arms. Choose the higher of the two numbers for each surface and add them together. For example, if the back is 45”x35” use the higher 45” number. Add that to the higher number for the seat and arms. Convert the inches into yards, and this is the total yardage of fabric needed to upholster your wing back chair.
Alternatively, you can opt for a slipcovered wingback chair, which allows you to disguise any damage to your upholstery, change your fabric style to suit your decor, and can be easily removed for washing.
