You should get four drawers in your kitchen island with drawers. On average, when you’re designing a functional kitchen, you want an island that is neither too large or small for the space—so the most common width of a work island is 42 inches. This allows for two good-sized drawers placed horizontally. The height of a normal kitchen island also allows for two drawers of good depth vertically. Four drawers is also a good amount of storage to add to your kitchen without overwhelming you or giving you too much space.
You should organize your kitchen islands with drawers in a way that supports how you use your kitchen. We recommend starting with between two and four drawers on your island.
Consider each working space in your kitchen, and what you organically tend to do in each area. Place your knives in the drawer under the cutting board; place your oven mitts in the drawer next to the oven; place your silverware in the drawer under the shelf where you keep the plates. It’s a good idea to line each drawer so you can clean them out easily, and use drawer dividers to keep smaller appliances in tow.
