The main difference between a coffee table and a large square cocktail table is that the former is round and, traditionally, a bit lower, whereas cocktail tables are usually slightly taller and either square or rectangular.
While they used to have different purposes in the past, nowadays they’re both used as a small surface placed in the middle of a seating area and can both be found in different heights.
Large square cocktail tables tend to be about 42” high, as that’s a comfortable leaning height for most people (and cocktail tables tend to feature at events where people stand). The width of these square tables will range from 24” to 36”, depending on how many people they are designed to serve. A 24” table will fit 2-3 people cozily; if you’re planning on giving people more food or you need room for more people, a 36” table will allow four people to place their drinks with ease.
