Japandi style combines the best of the Scandinavian idea of “hygge” and the Japanese idea of “wabi-sabi.” Hygge is the Nordic term for the homely feeling of coziness and wabi-sabi relates to finding beauty in imperfection. Many of these dining chairs feature a slightly curved back with arms that scoop around you for a sense of embracing or coziness. Each chair is constructed in natural woods and fabrics aren’t all high glitz and polish. Natural. Simple. Japandi.
Set of Two Japandi Wishbone Dining Chairs
Poly and Bark
These solidly-constructed dining chairs frames are constructed from solid wood, while the woven chair seats are woven from 100% natural hemp woven cord. They come fully assembled and weigh only 15 lbs with a generous 21.5” seat width and depth. They tuck neatly under your tabletop.
Designer Advice:
This Wishbone design was first created in 1949 by designer Hans Wegner. They are pretty enough to pull into your living room as extra seating, but you might want to add a back cushion to rest against as the rounded back with center vertical bar isn’t as supportive as a full backrest.
Cream Cushion Japandi Dining Chairs
This mid-century dining chair design is right in line with the Japandi dining chair. Simple and clean lines in the frame and upholstered seat and back, this chair is a combination of solid wood with vegan leather. The fabric is designed to resist water and is easy to clean.
Designer Advice:
Sold as a set of two, we love how the two back legs extend halfway up the chair back and then flips across for design drama as well as extra support. When you have chairs that look this sculptural, it makes sense to continue to make furniture choices that also double as works of art.
Low profile Japandi Dining Chair
The frame of this Japandi dining chair is made from solid ash wood and features a smooth matte finish. The unusual paper-cord seat wraps around the seat edges and has a stunning textural finish.
Designer Advice:
Ideal for a narrow dining room (or any eating area), this low-profile chair tucks flat against a dining table. The color options ensure there’s something for everyone’s color palette. The natural and walnut frame options both come with a natural seat color, while the black frame lets you choose between a contrasting natural seat color or a monochromatic black seat.
Cane Inset Japandi Dining Chair
Another beautiful example of the Japandi style, this dining chair frame comes in a natural, teak or black finish. The Viennese cane is strong and easy to care for. These chairs are sturdy but still nice and light to move at 20 lbs each.
Designer Advice:
In one of our favorite moves, the armless style of this dining chair is also available in a companion dining chair with arms. You can place the armed version of this Japandi dining chair at the head and foot of your table and set this chair along the sides of your table. Its squared-off lines sit beautifully together.
Curved Arms Japandi Arm Chair
These Japandi dining chairs are in the Wishbone styling and come as a set of two chairs. The natural rush seats are woven into a diamond pattern, adding contrast to the lines of the chair frame. Dust and/or vacuum the chair seats and do not wash them with water.
Designer Advice:
As the arms of this dining chair curve to the front significantly, you’ll want to ensure you have enough room around your dining table to allow for the chairs to be pushed in less than half their depth of 17”. If you fall in love with these chairs but don’t have room around all sides of your dining table, you could just use them at the head and foot.
Teak Wood Japandi Dining Chair
A Japandi take on a classic barrel-back dining chair, this beautiful chair is crafted from solid teak wood with a curved cane inset in its back. The teak is left in its natural color and complemented by the removable off-white linen seat cushion.
Solid Wood Set of Two Japandi Dining Chairs
With a natural woven French cane seatback and seat set in a solid birch and ash wood frame, this Japandi dining chair is all natural. Even the seat is held in place with rope ties. The frame comes in black, white, natural and walnut finishes combined with the natural-color cane.
Japandi Arm Chair
The natural wood tone of this solid beechwood dining chair makes it perfect for the Japandi style. Its natural lacquer finish is easily cleaned by being wiped down with warm, soapy water. Comes fully assembled and supports up to 300 lbs.
T Bar Back Japandi Dining Chair
Again, the natural color and solid wood construction of this dining chair make it a great candidate for inclusion in the Japandi design style category. The slat back is bowed for extra comfort, as is the curved seat. The natural grain and wood imperfections are wabi-sabi all the way.
Leather Upholstered Japandi Dining Chair
Sculptural and organic, this Satine dining chair has a lightly padded black or gray leather seat and back cushion. The four splayed chair legs and back support allow the natural wood grain to show through the stain finish, especially highlighted on the seat and leg edges. Supports up to 333 lbs.
Faux Leather Japandi Dining Chair
Crafted from solid ash wood, the walnut stain brings out the natural grain of the wood frame. The continuous seat and back cushion is upholstered in faux leather which is easy to wipe and keep clean. Comes with floor guides on the feet to protect your floors.
Walnut Japandi Dining Chair
The curved backrest and racerback-style cutout on this Japandi dining chair are sure to be attention grabbers. While the frame is crafted from solid walnut, the upholstery is faux leather over light foam. Sturdily-made, comfortable and a design delight.
