A cottage style futon is raised off the floor and sometimes sits on a spring base. However, most times, the futon mattress on your cottage couch or daybed is a similar firmness to those designed for the floor.

Sleeping on a firm mattress can help with the alignment of your spine and potentially reduce back pain. The most supportive futon mattresses are constructed from memory foam or feature innerspring coils. Choose a cottage style futon with a mattress that is at least 8” thick and covered in breathable upholstery such as cotton or microfiber.

Whether you want to use a cottage style futon every day is a personal choice, based on your body and how it reacts to sleeping on the futon mattress. Even if you don’t find it supports you well enough to use as a regular bed, a cottage style futon can certainly be used daily as a lounge or workspace.

Cottage style futons can come in a range of sizes, including single, twin, full, and queen size. They are also available in bi-fold or tri-fold options and with or without ottoman attachments, which can affect their overall dimensions.

A standard full futon frame measures between 76.5”- 87” wide, with a sleeping area of approximately 54”x75”. A queen size cottage style futon frame ranges from 82”-91.5” wide, with mattress dimensions of 80”x60”.

Tri-fold futon models are generally 2”-3” narrower than standard versions, while futon-ottoman combinations have frames that are up to 6” smaller than standard types, making them excellent space saving options.

Whether or not your cottage style futon is comfortable mostly depends on how high-quality your specific futon is. Higher-end futons are stuffed with memory foam or wool, which can make them more comfortable and supportive.

You’ll also want to consider the type of structure you’re using for your cottage style futon.

Pro tip: Look for a futon frame that has lots of consistent slatting and support, rather than one bar down the middle. This will make it less likely that you’ll actually feel the support through the cushion, which will make it much more comfortable.
