Buying Guide

Chenille is a very popular fabric for living room furniture, but many consumers want to know how well it holds up in the long run. Made of a microfiber pile, chenille is a soft, inviting addition to any living room look.

This plush material is ideal for inviting guests to sit down and feel at home, but if it's exposed to too much light, then it will start to fade. When chenille fades, it generally does so in an uneven, patchwork fashion.

If your living room gets a lot of natural light, prepare to have faded chenille furniture in as little as five years. Some manufacturers spray the chenille with a fabric protector that slows the progression of this discoloration.

The best way to preserve your chenille upholstery is to keep it away from direct sunlight. Position your chenille furniture away from windows, or be vigilant about closing the curtains on sunny days. Another tip is to find a chenille that isn’t made of rayon. Instead of rayon, opt for chenille living room furniture upholstery made with olefin or acrylic fibers for maximum durability and minimal fading.

When cleaning chenille living room furniture, the most effective and safest way to preserve the material is by using solvent-based fabric cleaners. You should avoid cleaning these furniture types with water, as it can cause chenille furniture material to shrink.

To clean your chenille furniture, begin by using a soft-bristled upholstery brush, and gently brush in repetitive, small and circular motions. This forces any dirt, dust, or residue that has been ingrained in the material to rise through and form a layer on top of the furniture.

Then put your vacuum on the lowest setting and use the attachment to collect the dirt. For a final spot check, use your soft-bristled upholstery brush to collect any remaining particles.
