- Cane Rattan - The cane is the layer of the rattan plant that is beneath the outer skin. It is peeled from the plant and processed so it becomes a long strand. The material has a natural shine, but it doesn’t absorb stain very well, so it’s best when it is left with its natural color.
- Reed Rattan - This one is rattan plant’s wood-like portion as it is porous and more fibrous compared to the cane layer. It is absorbent and it takes stain well unlike cane. The stools that have decorative embellishments are often made of reed as curls and swirls are easy to make with the material.
- Synthetic Materials - Rattan counter stools can also be made of synthetic materials that are designed to look similar to real rattan. Your most common synthetic material choices include PVC, PU, and PE. All of them are waterproof and they are mold resistant. They can even withstand constant sun exposure and extreme weather fluctuations which is why synthetic rattan stools are common options for outdoor seating.
- PU - Rattan stools made of PU have great elastic strength. They are resistant to cracking. If your stools will be used frequently, then PU’s flexibility makes it a good choice as it will provide a good life. The material is also mold resistant and has good UV properties. One reason why it isn’t the best material is because it isn’t recyclable.
- PE - PE is the stronger version or more durable option compared to PU. It is eco-friendly and it’s fully recyclable. Just like PU, it has mold resistant properties. It’s one of your best options if you want hard-wearing stools.
- PVC - This one has a lower quality than the two synthetic materials we mentioned, but it makes for cheap stools. If your priority is affordability instead of durability, then look for this material.
