Sold individually, these Queen Anne chairs can easily be used as an accent in the living room or with your dining table. They also include a comfy seat with practical polyester upholstery and some handy armrests.

Designer Advice:

Dark wood finishes tend to work better for Queen Anne chairs. They’re a more suitable match for antique or period-based interiors, too. However, if your room already looks a little cramped, a lighter wood finish can help you introduce an airier touch.

This set includes two luxurious armchairs in a sophisticated, regal design full of decorative elements. From its floral motifs to the button-tufting, the attention to detail behind it is bound to impress your guests. Still, the polyester upholstery is practical and easy to maintain.

Designer Advice:

You could use a set of two Queen Anne chairs to create a separate seating area. All you need to do is add a small coffee table in between them, perhaps in a contrasting finish. You’ll then obtain a cozy corner for more intimate conversations and catchups with a friend or family member.

This eye-catching chair is just under 42” in height. It comes from a vintage collection, so it’s literally one of a kind. It consists of a solid mahogany design with an upholstered seat. The white finish of its cushion makes it easy to match most palettes.

Showcasing a delightful linen finish, this Queen Anne chair is a great match for neutral palettes. It’ll also work really well with traditional, French country, or even some shabby chic interiors. It consists of a solid wood design with a polyester cushion.

Designer Advice:

While you can use them as accents with different types of decors, antique Queen Anne chairs would look out of place in the most contemporary homes. In that case, look for more modern takes. For instance, they could involve a richly toned wood finish or some cabriole legs. This model is a clear homage to Queen Anne designs through the S-curves on its backrest.

These two Queen Anne chairs are a proper premium choice for your living room. They’ll match most antique interiors while providing two extremely comfortable seats. However, given their size, we only recommend them in particularly large settings.

These two Queen Anne chairs inspire an elongated sense of verticality thanks to their fairly short seat but 24” high backrest. The neutral-colored linen cushion really pops against the rest of the black design, creating a charming contrasting effect.

Designer Advice:

Armrests are undoubtedly comfortably. However, some Queen Anne chairs without them can make more sense if space isn’t a luxury in your living or dining room. For example, they’d result in a cleaner visual flow, helping that area look a bit wider and less cramped. If using them as dining chairs, you’ll also obtain more wiggle room around the table.

Buying Guide

You may have witnessed antique Queen Anne chairs in movies where they’re used by royal families. By their name alone, one can imagine their complex design. These intricate furniture pieces have distinct characteristics. They have cabriole legs and wavy lines with the seats in the form of a horseshoe. They are often decorated at their knees and bases with attractive elements such as scroll motifs and carved shells.

When purchasing antique Queen Anne chairs, it’s important to check their construction, especially the materials they are made of to ensure their authenticity. Most pieces are crafted out of walnut; however, you'll find pieces made of maple and cherry as well. Imported mahogany wood became popular in the 1750s, so it’s often used by furniture craftsmen. Mahogany was imported frequently from the Caribbean to England.

Other woods that make up antique Queen Anne chairs include pine, cedar, ash, tulip, and beech. Differences in kinds of wood provide clues as to whether the pieces are original or not. For instance, when a chair’s seat has been replaced or repaired, the wood may not match the rest of the chair’s construction.

Queen Anne chairs were among the first to incorporate curving cabriole legs. Even when the chairs are short, they still feature cabriole-shaped legs. A pad foot is also commonly found on chairs with the Queen Anne style, but trifid feet are used as well, which replaced the ball foot’s heavy look that is used in other stylings like William and Mary. Later pieces with the Queen Anne style may have claw or ball feet but they’re more indicative of Chippendale.

Take note that on “country” Queen Anne chairs that are made from the workshops of refined furniture makers in Colonial cities, they don’t have cabriole legs. The legs may come with turned embellishments but they’re often straight instead of curved.

Spade feet may also be used with country pieces; however, they’re less refined compared to the higher quality chairs made by the experienced furniture makers of the era. They're also less valuable.

Apart from the ubiquitous cabriole legs that are so often incorporated on antique Queen Anne chairs, there are other features or characteristics to look out for. Remember that not all design elements can be seen on every piece. Instead, they are frequently used on antique pieces, which you should know about as you familiarize yourself with such type of furniture.

  • Delicate but broad features with curved elements.
  • Chairs may have top rails that are yoked-shaped and back splats that have solid vase shapes like those found in Hogarth chairs.
  • Seats often feature a compass or horseshoe and aren’t upholstered.
  • Simple shell and fan carvings are used in embellishing many pieces.
  • Space saving features like a slim profile are often incorporated into antique Queen Anne chairs.
  • For upholstered pieces, they’re decorated with silk damask, crewelwork with pictorial designs or large flowers, and printed cotton. Leather is also used for upholstery but is rare. Keep in mind that it’s rare to find original fabrics that are used in decorating older upholstered pieces in the Queen Anne style.
