Wingback Dining Chairs

Buying Guide

Wing back chairs have been a popular trend in residential decor since the 18th century. Originally designed to keep drafts from the shoulders of those taking a seat, the style stuck. Today these chairs have taken on new functions and renewed designs, like attractive wing back dining chairs.

The wing backs of today range from any chair with a high back and protruding wings to a single wrap around design. Upholstered and with lower positioned arms, they are designed for comfort while dining.

Upholstered wing back chairs use material that is durable, colorfast and, in many cases, fire retardant and stain proof.

  • Polyester Blend - Polyester has a host of different looks and feels that mimic the delicate fabrics of yesterday. Velvet, satin and tweed are examples of how polyester can offer durability without compromising looks.
  • Microfiber - Made from polypropylene, this fabric is stain repelling and very soft.
  • Cotton - Cotton blends can create a clean and smooth look for contemporary or modern decors.
  • Linen - A look of refinement is achieved with linen. Special cleaning instructions may apply.
  • Faux Leather - This leather look-alike is made with PVC and polyurethane to make it flexible, breathable and easy to clean.
  • Solid Wood - Sturdy frames and legs are necessary for a large dining chair that reinforces up to 300 pounds. Different types of wood, like mahogany, oak and rubberwood are used for framing.
  • Foam - Standard upholstery foam is used to provide a cushion for backs and seats.

Today's wing back dining chairs are designed to fit comfortably under dining tables to avoid damage. A typical dining chair should measure 16" to 23" from floor to seat and have short or low arms to allow them to fit under the table easily. Some wing back chairs are armless, using the top back to provide a wing back appearance. Bar height wing back chairs can offer a sophisticated look with tufted backs and delicate minimized wings.

A popular traditional dining room may have two wing back dining chairs at the ends of the table and high-back armless upholstered chair lining the sides. This look can also be used in contemporary settings as well as transitional decors. Corresponding ornate legs are often used in traditional styles. More modern winged chairs may have the wings repositioned to the arms with straight legs, giving a mild sweeping appearance. This style can also work well with low back models where height is not an option. Multiple faux leather styles can accent rustic, country and industrial decors.

Because these chairs use the latest technology in fabric, most can be vacuumed or wiped clean with a dust attracting tool. Faux leather is water-proof for cleaning with a damp cloth. Read manufacturers manual on care before spot cleaning any upholstered chair.
