Buying Guide

Yes, using glass top end tables metal is usually a very good idea for several reasons. First of all, a glass element will always help make your living room look airier and wider than it actually is, avoiding a busy or cramped feel.

A glass top end table can also help you add a contemporary twist, especially when compared to traditional solid wood. Finally, glass surfaces are easier to wipe clean should you incur in an accidental spillage.

However, keep in mind that you might need to wipe it more often to conceal fingerprints and that, if you have young kids running around, a glass model could be relatively more fragile.

Glass top end tables (metal ones, too) are statement pieces. When you’re decorating them, you don’t want to go overboard; you want to give your table a chance to look upscale and modern all by itself.

You’ll also want to avoid decorating with glass or metal pieces, or you’ll have reflections all over your room. We recommend decorating very simply, with a small stack of books, a speaker, or a small wooden sculpture to mix materials in a creative way.

Tempered glass is the best type for a glass top end table. It is nearly four times as strong as annealed (or ordinary) glass.

Tempered glass is formed through a treatment process that involves heating to temperatures exceeding 600 degrees Celsius which is followed by a high-pressure cooling. The outer surface is cooled quicker than the center and leads to the center remaining in tension and the outer layer in compression. This gives tempered glass its strength.

Tempered glass breaks at a surface compression of about 24,000 pounds per square inch (psi) while annealed glass breaks at 6,000 psi. Also, when it breaks, annealed glass shatters into jagged shards that could cause deep, dangerous cuts.

On the other hand, tempered glass breaks into small, near harmless pieces. This makes it especially useful in spaces that see a lot of traffic from family, friends and pets. Such traffic increases the risk of an accident that could cause the end table’s glass top to break and potentially lead to severe injury.
