In the heart of Melbourne's inner-city, a 120-year-old weatherboard cottage stood as a testament to Victorian craftsmanship and charm. When tasked with renovating and extending this historical gem, Ande Bunbury Architects faced the challenge of balancing heritage preservation with modern innovation. The result? The awe-inspiring transformation of the 3in1 House - a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary living.

Honoring Heritage, Redefining Space
The original cottage, adorned with period details, presented a canvas rich in history. Yet, stringent heritage guidelines from the Council posed a challenge - any alteration had to be subtle, almost invisible. To navigate this, the architects devised a clever solution: a side garage discreetly tucked away, its dark hue contrasting with the light-colored facade, accentuating the cottage's timeless beauty. The upper storey, gracefully set back and adorned with gabled and skillion roofs mirroring the original pitch, pays homage to the architectural legacy while embracing modernity.

Crafting Versatile Spaces
Central to the design was the concept of versatility. The upper storey extension, crafted to blend seamlessly with the existing structure, offers a plethora of possibilities. Initially envisioned as a space for a photography business, its adaptable layout ensures it can effortlessly transform into independent accommodation or an inviting Airbnb retreat. From the spacious studio room to the cozy alcove, every corner exudes functionality and charm.

Sustainability in Action
Beyond aesthetics, sustainability took center stage in the 3in1 House project. Passive solar orientation and the use of local, durable materials not only enhance energy efficiency but also reduce environmental impact. Prefabricated Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) expedited construction, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency. A 6.66kW photovoltaic electric array adorns the extension roof, harnessing solar energy while seamlessly integrating with the heritage front roofs.
