Red, textured extra large indoor planters for trees

Orren Ellis

Many planters tend to have neutral shades—the better to feature the colors of the plants inside them. While this can be a great design choice (and one we’ll talk more about later!), we wanted to start with a statement color with texture.

These red planters have a beautiful soft, sculptural texture that will serve as a gorgeous foundation for plants of any kind, including huge trees. The dark red color will set off green or neutral-colored leaves beautifully! This type of planter would be an excellent addition to any type of modern aesthetic.

Buying Guide

Large indoor planters can be a way to have the best air cleaner in the world inside your home – namely, large indoor plants such as elephant ears, or Norfolk pines. While these are plants that can grow outside in warm climates, they can also grow inside as long as sufficient light is provided. Patio doors or even the addition of a grow light can create an appropriate environment for large houseplants. A beautiful decorative pot just makes it that much better.

What features to look for in large indoor planters?

Large planters can come in a variety of types and styles, including galvanized tubs, copper, ceramic, concrete or plain old plastic. You can even repurpose containers that were originally intended for other things. Keep in mind that large planters can be quite heavy, and that they can sometimes leak or overflow. Place a drip pan under any planter of any size. For the largest ones, it’s a good idea to place the drip pan on a four-wheeled furniture dolly, such as is placed under pianos to move them. Look for a model with locking wheels so that the plant, drip pan and dolly all stay in one spot when placed where you want it.

What are the most popular planter designs?

Basic White Planter – Ceramic, or Plastic

A basic white, circular planter can be used almost anywhere and go with nearly any décor. It makes a nice entryway greeting or something of interest near a large window or patio door. If you have pets, look for pet-friendly plants and avoid species such as dieffenbachia or philodendron. Look for pet-friendly plants such as palms or spider plants. If in doubt, ASPCA has a full list of plants that are pet-friendly.

Set of Planters

If one planter is good, why not a set of planters? While you are at it, small trees or shrubs cut into topiary can make an attractive row in your sunroom or just inside a glass patio door. If you have your pots on plant dollies, they can easily be wheeled outside for a little extra sunshine.

Basket Planters

By the same token, woven baskets look attractive with plants in them, especially cacti or small trees, but they are not impermeable to water and certainly won’t last long without some sort of protection. Place your drip pan in the bottom of the basket, and then add one of those infamous plastic pots. The planter basket will look lovely and will last much longer.

Large indoor planters can come in many different materials and types. They and the plants in them can be an attractive way to improve the appearance of your home or office.
