Buying Guide

Wall mounted wine rack and glass holders can be:

  • Made of metal or wood (in both cases, you can usually find them in different finishes) as well as composite wood, plastic, glass, or even creative options like industrial-style pallets
  • Decorative, which usually means they’ll hold between 4 and 12 wine bottles
  • Larger: these models will probably be less decorative because, due to the weight of all those bottles, they’ll need to focus on sturdiness

You should store wine bottles in a wine rack either horizontally or at a 45-degree angle. If at the 45-degree angle, the bottle should be positioned with the cork in the down-ward facing direction.

Bottle direction is especially important for those bottles that are fitted with corks. Keeping the bottles horizontal or at an angle keeps the cork moist which is vital for long-term storage.

A dried-out cork may get loose due to pressure changes and this can lead to air seepage. The exposure to air triggers chemical changes in the wine and may cause premature aging. A dried cork may also crumble into the bottle during uncorking thus compromising the wine’s quality.

You do not have to store screw-top wine bottles on their side. However, for storage management efficiency reasons alone, horizontal positioning represents a better use of space while allowing easy access.
