Buying Guide

Not every living space can accept a large wraparound couch. The next best thing is a small sectional sofa that delivers the same warm style that small rooms can embrace. A small leather sectional sofa will bring elegance and the feel of soft natural hide that is only produced by genuine or full-grain leather. Leatherette is another option for active families that desire the look of leather, but have cost considerations.

Not all leather is the same. A hide can come from different areas of the animal, some more robust than others. A hide will also go through different processing techniques to come to a desired look and feel.

  • Full-Grain - Full-grain leather is the leader for prime leather in furniture. There is no processing to remove the natural elegance of the hide and is highly durable.
  • Aniline - Full-grain leather that has been treated with dyes is called Aniline leather. This process hides imperfections and leaves the leather looking more even in appearance.
  • Genuine - Many leather items will sport a tag announcing that it is genuine leather. This is actually split-leather that does not possess the same toughness as full-grain leather. Although rich and beautiful, it is not as durable as full-grain leather.
  • Pigmented - Although pigmented leather is a lower grade than full-grain leather, it works well with furniture. Processing with dyes cover all imperfections to leave an even, shiny surface. Resistant to stains, it is great for active families.
  • Leatherette - Leatherette is made up of synthetic materials that are made to look like leather. It can cost half the price of full-grain leather but does not wear as long.

Leather is normally presented in its natural color. However, dyes are used to create any color your desire. White, black, gray and blue are popular, in addition to natural brown.

A small leather sectional sofa lacks the full spectrum effect that makes up a wraparound couch. It may have one small section that juts out from one end of the couch for extra room. These are commonly referred to as L-shaped. The pieces may also be movable so different styles can be created. Loose pieces may also consist of ottomans and include storage areas in the arms and seats.

Adjustable headrests and recliners are popular in small leather sectional sofas. Little or no ornamentation is common on sectional sofas, which makes them perfect for modern or contemporary decors.

A common couch size is 110 inches with a longer end section measuring 65 inches. These sizes can vary according to the style.

Full-grain leather is porous and will absorb water. It is recommended to purchase a leather cleaning cream to have on hand to clean oil and spots from the surface. Leatherette can be wiped with a damp cloth as the fabric is not porous and will wipe clean easily.
