Buying Guide

Having a pet bird comes with a ton of advantages. These pets aren’t just great companions, but they also require little maintenance. Of course, before you can have a pet bird, you'll need a bird cage. While there are plenty of choices to choose from, an iron bird cage is always a good option. The best thing about this type of enclosure is that it's very durable, which makes it a good value for your money.

Keep in mind that there are plenty of iron bird cages to pick from. To help you narrow down the best one for you, this article is going to be a buying guide for iron bird cages.

To find the optimal cage size, here are a few rules of thumb to follow: (1) When your pet bird is sitting on the cage perch, the tail should not touch the bottom and back of the cage. (2) The width of the cage should be at least one and a half inches wider than the wingspan of your bird.

Bear in mind that birds are typically accustomed to wide open spaces. Hence, if you want what's best for your pet, then you'd want the biggest cage as your budget and allotted space allows. The downside to this route is that it's not optimal or resource-efficient.

If you want to save your resources (e.g., space, money), you'd want a cage that’s optimal for your bird's size.

Bird cages will feature bars as a way of enclosing your pet. It's imperative that you pick the right spacing between the bars. If it's too narrow, then you'll have lesser visibility. On the other hand, if it's too wide, then your beloved pet can escape.

The size of your pet bird is the primary determining factor for finding the right bar spacing.

  • For small birds, the ideal bar spacing is one-half to five-eighths of an inch. Cockatiels, budgies, parrots, lovebirds, finches, parakeets, and canaries are often categorized as small birds.
  • Cockatoos, smaller amazons, smaller African greys, mini macaws, Senegal, Pionus, lories, and Quakers are typically considered as medium-sized birds. For such birds, a bar spacing of one-half to three-fourths of an inch is ideal.
  • Large birds include African Greys, toucans, Hyacinth macaws, and Congos. The bar spacing of three-fourths of an inch to one inch is ideal for these large-sized birds.

The thickness of the bars will also play an important role when choosing the right iron bird cages. If the bars are not thick enough, your bird may be strong enough to cause broken welds, bent bars, and other damages.

  • For small-sized birds, the ideal bar gauge is 2 mm.
  • For medium-sized birds, the ideal bar gauge is 2.5 mm.
  • For large-sized birds, the ideal bar gauge is 3.5 mm.

Keep in mind that there are pet birds that are considered as extra large. For such pets, a gauge size of 5 mm or more is ideal.
