Buying Guide

The kitchen island pot rack lighting style you choose needs to either match your kitchen decor or serve as a slight contrast adding depth or balance. These rack lighting fixtures most often fit above your kitchen island or a counter, so you will want to choose a style that not only looks good but is also convenient to use and provides the type of lighting needed.

A traditional style can pair well with almost any kitchen without seeming out of place. For a rustic or farmhouse kitchen, consider a distressed wood finish style. You can also go with a vintage style, maybe with an aged copper finish and vintage shades for the lights.

Spruce up a contemporary style kitchen with an iron rack, hooks, and lighting for an added industrial style element. Often, the industrial style with its metal elements can add functionality and uniqueness to most kitchens.

You also need to consider the wattage of the fixture and how much light it provides. In general, you need around 25W for every 50 ft² of space. However, as pots and pans on the rack may obstruct some of the light, choose higher wattage bulbs to ensure that your food prep area is adequately illuminated.

Your kitchen island pot rack lighting is a great way to take advantage of vertical space in your kitchen. To know how many pots you can safely store on your pot rack, take a cue from the number of hooks or racks that come with the fixture. Make sure that the pot rack is installed firmly into the kitchen island or ceiling with adequate support, and try to spread out the weight of your pots evenly—e.g., don’t put all of your cast iron pots on one side and your colanders on the other!

For a good rule of thumb, a large pot rack can usually sustain about 10 pots; however, this will vary depending on the types of pots you have.

Kitchen island pot rack lighting is easy to replace, though the bulb type differs between models. To remove the light bulb, ensure the power is off and the fixture is cool. Before you purchase replacement light bulbs, remove the old ones to get a sample of the correct bulb pin type. If you still have the fixture packaging, you can also check what kind of bulb is required.

Use a “push and twist” action for removing bayonet caps lightbulbs or a screw action for Edison screw caps lamp fittings. For fluorescent tubes, twist the tube about a quarter-turn and lower the lightbulb from the socket. You may need to remove some of the pots and hanging dishware from the rack before making the switch to avoid knocking any pans to the floor.
